Retail

Retail in downtown Houston is a major focus and an important component to service our downtown and near downtown residents, office workforce of 140,000 and the many visitors that stay and come to downtown for meetings, conventions or just for fun.

Most of downtown’s major infrastructure projects were completed in 2005, making downtown a new, vibrant and easy to navigate place. Daytime and nighttime activities have increased pedestrian traffic along the major streets and increased visitation and convention business has improved the potential for retail more than ever.

Although you will find retail throughout downtown, our major activity centers are located in the Historic District, a quirky mix of dining and nightlife establishments, and Main Street Square, home to Macy’s, which just announced that it's regional office will be located in downtown Houston, and the new Houston Pavilions (opened in October 2008). Just two blocks from Main Street Square is The Shops at Houston Center, an indoor mall that recently received a $12 million re-do with slick new signage, lighting and furnishings. High profile retail and dining will also be located in the new Discovery Green park and One Park Place Luxury Apartment Residences.

More info on the downtown marketplace can be found in our recently published Downtown Houston Retail Market Guide (pdf, 2.6 mb)

The Houston Downtown Management District also has a retail development coordinator on staff to help retail establishments find their perfect downtown location. Please note that we are not a "broker", but a facilitator, tour guide and consultant to potential retail tenants, property owners, brokers and tenant representatives. The Downtown District provides this service free of charge.  Please contact our retail development coordinator:
